Rory McIlroy begged his girlfriend to get back together before the US Open
While speaking of private life on a documentary in the BBC Northern Ireland last week, the newly crowned US Open champion sheepishly revealed that he actually had to beg her girlfriend Holly Sweeney to get back with her. The revelations, stunning as they
are, gave an insight in the personality of the young Irishman who won the first major of his career at 22 years of age.
“I had to do a lot of begging and grovelling to get her back,” McIlroy said. “Holly is fantastic. I have known her for six years and for someone my age that is a huge chunk of my life. She keeps my feet on the ground and knows the things to say to me. She
has been such a great support. She takes my mind off golf and everything else that is going on.”
Sweeney, also 22, has been with the rising Irish star since they were 15 and the couple have been together for most part of the proceeding time. McIlroy, at the start of the current season, decided to part ways with his girlfriend in order to concentrate
more on his sport, which, he now admits, was a grave mistake.
McIlroy has been appreciative of Sweeney’s influence on his victory and also his strong performance in the Masters earlier in the year. He came out openly to laud Sweeney’s contribution in his success. Sweeney, who was watching McIlroy pull in a wire-to-wire
victory at the Congressional last month, threw a party to her friends to celebrate McIlroy’s success.
McIlroy became the youngest player to win the championship after Bobby Jones won it in 1923 and also with a huge lead of eight shots. In all four days of the event, the young Irishman managed to stay clear of the rest of the field by several shots to win
the first major title of his career.
Contrary to what many of the experts would recommend, McIlroy decided to go on an extended break from the mainstream sport after the event, indulging in unending celebrations and whirlwind tour of his home country. He went over to Germany to witness the
Heavy Weight boxing title match and also met Andy Murray before the Wimbledon showdown.
McIlroy, apart from being appreciative for his girlfriend’s support, also lauded his parents’ relentless struggle which saw him reach the summit so early in his career. His father, who worked most of his life pulling in two odd-hour jobs just to help his
son make a career in an otherwise expensive sport. His mother worked in a manufacturing unit just to make two ends meet.
McIlroy went over to throw a warm hug to his father after he sank the ball for the 18th on Congressional and wished him a “Happy Fathers Day”. The young Irishman is likely to keep up with his stellar performance in the Open Championship this week.
