His 72-hole aggregate score of 268 (16-under), which is a new U.S. Open record, left everyone around the globe stunned.
He is the only player in the history of the US Open to achieve a score of 13-under-par at any point in the tournament.

The world number two golfer has fallen prey to into many controversies in recent years, regarding his comments on Tiger Woods and his potential future. His comments on Woods’ performance got him into serious trouble in the media.
In the same year, McIlroy gave a shut up call to the commentator Jay Townsend, who made a questionable remark on his course management skills.
His twitter page was full of disrespectful remarks on Townsend regarding his criticism. In his opinion, Townsend was a “failed golfer” and his opinion had no effect on him.
Later that month, McIlroy stood by his words and said that these words were used in the defense of his caddie J. P. Fitzgerald.
2012 is looking promising, as his recent performance has been convincing. He is only participating in 23 events this year and is taking things easy.
"I don't want to be burned out by the time I'm 30," said McIlroy. His calm was visible and said much about how happy and satisfied he is with his current form.
Tiger Woods has been out of form and out of touch, whereas McIlroy is the top notch contender for the number one spot in the world ranking.
His performance and his orthodox, aggressive behavior have led to immense popularity and many good wins at the same time.
