Rory McIlroy considers Steve Williams’ outburst a little too much
This would probably make up for the most hilarious story of the day when none other than the “spoiled brat” Rory McIlroy is now of the view that Adam Scott’s caddie Steve Williams went too far over his statements after Scott’s victory at WGC Bridgestone
Invitational.
McIlroy’s statement might have held some ground, let alone any credibility, had he not been blasting out on Tiger Woods himself on several occasions. Not just Woods, McIlroy also failed to keep himself from bad-mouthing the journalists, who criticized his
remarks after the Open Championship last month.
Nevertheless, McIlroy feels Williams has done some unusual damage to his stature with his reckless comments after Scott’s much awaited victory. Williams went over to state the triumph as “the greatest victory of his life”, conveniently ignoring the barrage
of major wins he pulled in alongside his previous boss Woods.
“You say things in the heat of the moment – Stevie maybe went a little far,” McIlroy said. “I definitely think it took away from Adam’s win. It was a phenomenal win – he played unbelievable all week.”
The 22-year-old Irishman has now turned into an efficient bad-mouthing machine with his overboard comments after every fortnight or so. He does not let go of any opportunity where he might be able to break headlines especially during the days when he is
not able to do the trick with his sport.
McIlroy’s recent comments however, might have been triggered by his intrinsic golfer’s instinct where many of the former big wigs of the sport also criticized Williams’ irresponsible behavior.
“Adam’s the one hitting the shots. Stevie’s obviously had a good influence on him the last four weeks or whatever it is, but Adam’s the one who ultimately gets the ball in the hole.” McIlroy went over to state. “A caddie is very important at times, but you
can’t take anything away from what Adam did.”
Paul Azinger, the former captain of the winning US team at Ryder Cup, along with many other golfers did not appreciate Williams decision to interact with the press on his own, something which is traditionally considered off-limits for caddies. But a reprisal
on such an issue is nothing but hilarious when it comes from McIlroy himself.
