Rory McIlroy eager to defend his Wells Fargo Championship title in Charlotte – Golf news
Irish Golfer Rory McIlroy is looking forward to defend his Wells Fargo Championship title in North Carolina this weekend.
The young player is putting his Masters meltdown behind him and looking at brighter things.
Part of the PGA Tour, the Wells Fargo Championship will start on May 5, 2011 at the Quail Hollow Golf Course in Charlotte. This will be the first American golf tournament McIlroy is appearing in since the Masters at Augusta. Maintaining a three round read
in the first major championship of 2011, McIlroy posted an 80 in the final round to ruin his shot at the Masters.
Following his meltdown, many players came forward to console McIlroy. Having a lot of potential in him, McIlroy has developed a soft corner with many of his friends who are also professional golfers.
World number one Lee Westwood thinks that he should not be discouraged like that and believes that he will go on to win many green jackets. Martin Kaymer, winner of the 2010 PGA Championship, talked with McIlroy as the two played in the Malaysian Open in
Kuala Lumpur. Kaymer said that when he was 21, he was not even on tour so he should not be disheartened.
Greg Norman advised McIlroy that he should not read golf magazines, newspapers or watch golf channels for sometime now.
However, being totally cut off from the media is obviously hard. McIlroy said that one has to keep up to date with goings on around the world and he cannot let other people influence his thinking.
McIlroy should really be confident as he has now surpassed Tiger Woods in world rankings. Only by a difference of .01 point, Rory McIlroy is ranked sixth in the world. The defending champion will not have to face the former world number one anyway, as Woods
opted out of the tournament due to a knee concern.
The good news is that McIlroy is over Augusta and optimistic about the upcoming weekend.
“A couple days maybe. I mean, I’m fine. I mean, it was a great chance to win a first major, but it’s golf. It’s only golf at the end of the day. No one died. Very happy with my life, very happy with what’s going on, very happy with my game,” said McIlroy.
