Rory McIlroy expects the US Open to be a low scoring competition – Golf news
World number two Rory McIlroy, who has had a poor run of season so far, has said that his iron play is "dialled in" and is confident to make a strong start at the US Open this week, on Thursday, June 13, 2013.
The second major golf championship of the season is set to be staged at the Merion Golf Club, where the heavy rains hit last weekend, making the playing surface a bit firmer and faster.
Talking to the reporter in the media room on Tuesday, the Northern Irishman said that he is expecting low scores at the US Open this week. At the same time, he also believes that it will be a difficult task to save the pars if
a player makes a mistake and find roughs on the course.
“I prefer this sort of golf when you hit a shot and it stays where you think it's going to stay,” he said. "It's still pretty tight and when you hit it in the rough you are not going to make birdie from there. I expect the scores
to be lower than usual in the US Open but I don't think you will see scores like Congressional.”
"It's probably going to play into my hands a bit more and my iron play is dialled in. As long as I can put it in the fairway I can take advantage of it,” he added.
McIlroy has been able to show his top game so far this season, which is the main why many golf experts are hesitating to rate him as a hot favourite for a victory in the event.
At the same time, they also believe that McIlroy certainly has the potential to make a strong comeback, especially when he is participating in a major event.
For the first two rounds in Ardmore, he is paired with the legendary Tiger Woods, who currently holds the top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings, and the third ranked Adam Scott of Australia, who won the Masters Tournament
at Augusta National earlier this year as his first major title victory.
