Rory McIlroy eyes a win in the Players Championship - Golf News
The world number one Rory McIlroy is eying a win in the $9.5 million Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass, scheduled to start from Thursday, May 10, 2012.
McIlory recently returned to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings for the third time in his career, following his second-place finish at the Wells Fargo Championship last week.
He lost to his contemporary Rickie Fowler, who carded a birdie on the first extra hole in the playoffs against McIlroy and the third playoff competitor DA Points’ par strokes.
Despite the loss in the playoffs, McIlroy was not jealous of Fowler and said that he really did play well throughout the tournament.
For the last five months, McIlroy has not finished outside of the top five except two times and currently enjoying the best form of his career.
That is the reason why he said that he wants to match his ideal Tiger Woods’ performance that he displayed in the 2001 Players Championship to take the trophy home.
In the meantime, Woods is also hoping to return to his form through a good finish at Sawgrass.
He was tied for the 40th position along with McIlroy in the Masters Tournament last month and failed to make the cut in last week’s Wells Fargo Championship.
“I've got two wins in four months - not too bad,” he talked about the wins in the Chevron World Challenge and Arnold Palmer Invitational. “Unfortunately the last two tournaments I've played in weren't that great. No big deal. We'll just continue working
and try and put it together this week”.
In the 2010 edition of the tournament, Woods pulled out during the final round and did the same last year when he was six-over par through nine holes in the opening round.
He injured his leg, which caused his withdrawal from the event last year and he then kept himself out of the field for a couple of months thereafter.
McIlory also does not have good memories with this tournament, as he missed the cut both the times he made teed off.
That is the reason why he stayed away from the event last year. This year, he decided to return with a completely different frame of mind. He is now among the hot favourites to win the tournament.
