Rory McIlroy feels disappointed after his third-round performance at the Cadillac Championship – Golf News
The world number one, Rory McIlroy, fired the best round on the third day of the Cadillac Championship with a seven-under par 65 score to finish eight strokes behind the 54-hole leader, Bubba Watson.
Despite performing well, McIlroy looked disappointed, as he said that he could have done even better to remain close to the top of the leaderboard.
According to McIlroy, he was expecting four birdies on the final six holes that he played. However, they did not come his way and he had to stay at 65 at the end of the round.
McIlroy said that he was aiming around 60 when he was finished with his initial 12 holes. He was at nine-under at that time.
“I never thought I would stand up here and say I am disappointed with seven under, but today is definitely one of those days,” McIlroy said.
“You are thinking birdie four of the last six and here we go,” he said. “But obviously, it didn’t happen like that”.
His aim of scoring 59 turned to 65 because of the two bogeys that he made on his final five holes.
McIlroy recorded a victory in last week’s Honda Classic and replaced Luke Donald to stand atop the Official World Golf Rankings.
Following his win and taking the number one position, he said that he was looking for a start in the second World Golf Championship of the year.
His performance in the opening WGC – Accenture Match Play Championship in February was phenomenal. He won all the matches in the match-play event and reached the final.
However, Hunter Mahan defeated him to take the trophy and McIlroy had to wait for the Honda Classic to turn his dream of becoming the world’s number one into a reality.
In view of his recent performances, it was expected that he will outclass his opponents in the Cadillac Championship or at least remain in contention for the top position with a very low margin till the end of the event.
This is the major reason that McIlroy is feeling disappointed with his performance, despite scoring the least score of the day.
Watson has a three-stroke lead over his opponents and he is in great form to record his first win of the season.
