Rory McIlroy fights back after the miscue
Everything was going perfectly for Rory McIlroy until the 15th hole. The Irishman was not in a good form recently but his start on the first round was very impressive. His first 9 holes were flawless, on which he scored two birdies as well.
On the tenth, he bogeyed but again recovered with two birdies on the 11th and 12th hole, followed by two pars.
When Rory was about to tee off on the fifteenth, he would have never thought that he would hit a spectator, that too, on his head.
However, after the end of shot he found that he had hit a 16-year-old boy, Jason Blue, on his head. The boy had come all the way from Bristol too see the Open. After hitting the boy’s head the ball ricocheted and stopped near a burger stand.
From there on, it was a tough going for the world number two and he ended up double bogeying the hole. This pegged him back massively. However, the boy got an autographed glove from Rory as a souvenir and Rory thanked God that the boy was alright.
Jason Blue was treated immediately by the medics on the spot, there was no need for him to go the hospital as the injury was cured then and there.
"If he could have headed it the other way, it would have been in the fairway," McIlroy said jokingly, as he recalled the incident. "The most important thing was that he was OK. Because I would have felt terrible if it had have been worse than what it was".
The boy was pretty brave and a true golf fan, he did not really care about his head but was worried where the ball was.
Nevertheless, all the credit goes to the Irishman who held his composure and scored birdies on the next two holes. Rory finished his first round with a par on the eighteenth, leaving him three shots adrift of the leader Adam Scott.
Rory seems to have found his stride after a couple of average tournaments.
While talking to the media after the first round Rory said, “An eventful last four holes, anyway, everything was going along pretty nicely, 3 under standing on the 15th tee”.
