Rory McIlroy finally has the magic trick to tame the vicious Augusta National next week
The season is warming up for the first major event of the year, The Masters at Augusta National next week. Top-50 players from the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) will be locked in a stiff battle to clinch the green jacket over the weekend.
Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy will be returning to the coveted Augusta National at Magnolia Lane and will be hoping to avoid the haunting memories of last year.
The young golfer vows to land the title and insists that he is well aware of how to tame the vicious course this time around.
He said, “Last year’s Masters was definitely a defining moment for me. It could’ve been a crossroads in my career. I could’ve done what I did on Sunday at Augusta and let it affect me and let it get to me, and maybe go into a slump, or get down or feel
sorry for myself”.
McIlroy was leading the event for the consecutive three days with his masterful strokes until came the dreadful moment in the final round where he threw away his four stroke lead and fell for an over-par, 80.
The 22-year-old broke into tears for what was the biggest loss of his short career.
In a few months time, however, the Ulsterman was back in his groove and landed the US Open title at Congressional Country Club with a wire-to-wire win.
McIlroy claims that he eventually found out the reason of his loss and will be hoping to avoid the same this year.
He said, “One of the worst things I did was just trying to stay ahead of everyone else, instead, I maybe should’ve had a number in my head, like getting to 15 under. So it was a big mistake of thinking too much about what everyone else was doing”.
McIlroy is one of the hot-favourites for the event and many have placed their bets on the young Ulsterman despite of Tiger Woods’ latest victory at Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill last week.
He is currently poised at number two on the official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), trailing Englishman Luke Donald by few points.
