Rory McIlroy finishes the 2012 golf season on a high note, wins the DP World Tour Championship
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy finished his miraculous 2012 European Tour campaign on a high note by winning the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, on Sunday, November 25, 2012.
The tournament was being played at the Jumeirah Golf Estates, featuring only the top-60 players in The Race to Dubai.
Earlier in the morning, Justin Rose fired a course-record 62, to take the clubhouse lead, with a 21-under par overall score.
However, his score was not good enough to challenge the in-form Northern Irishman, as McIlroy clinched the victory after posting a 66 for a 23-under par tournament score.
The 23-year-old got off to a shaky start and reached the 14th hole in just one-under, thanks to three bogeys against four birdies.
With only five holes remaining, the world number one was three strokes behind Rose. Thereafter, he picked up pace and birdied each of the next five holes to ruin Rose’s chances of taking home his second European Tour title of the season.
"I saw Justin make a charge - I heard the cheers," he said, "but to finish like that was great. It’s an unbelievable feeling – I said I wanted to win both trophies this week and that is exactly what I’ve managed to do even though I didn’t get off to the
best of starts with a bogey on the first”.
He added, “I knew I needed to do something special over the closing few holes - I really couldn’t have wished for a better ending”.
Talking about his amazing 2012 campaign, he expressed his pleasure in backing up his 2011 season with another major title victory this year – he won the 2012 PGA Championship.
This year, he also became the second player in the history of the game to win the money list titles on both the PGA Tour and the European Tour. Luke Donald was the first one to achieve that feat last year.
He now plans to keep the momentum going into the 2013 season, in a bid to add more titles to his resume.
“I made all the targets that I set for this year and I’m already looking forward to 2013,” he said.
