Rory McIlroy fires a stunning round once again
Rory McIlroy continued his good run of form from the PGA Championship. After winning at Kiawah Islands, Rory went on to claim the number one spot in the world. Moreover, after the victory at the Deutsche Bank Open, he topped the FedEx Cup ranking as well.
Rory is most certainly guaranteed a spot at the Tour Championship but the motivation to win is still there. Rory shot a stunning 8-under 64 to finish round one at the top of the leaderboard, along with Bo Van Pelt and Graham DeLaet of Canada.
Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods were once again paired together at the playoffs and the fans did get to see some excellent golf from the duo. Tiger Woods is just a stroke behind the leader after shooting a round of 65.
"It was great. With the soft conditions you could really shoot a number out there, and I did," McIlroy said.
Pundits have predicted that there will be some low scores this time around due to the rain. The rains soften up the greens and as a result, golfers can aim right at the pin. That is because the ball will not travel much on the green due to the dampness.
"I took advantage of hitting the ball really well, hitting it in the fairway, which I need to do, and also hitting it long, and gave myself a lot of opportunities,” exclaimed the world number one.
"I missed a few, but was able to make the most of them. Great start to the tournament," said the man from Belfast.
If McIlroy wins this event, then it will be his third victory in four starts – a magnificent achievement that would be. Rory showed why he is known as a big hitter with his big booming drives and hitting the golf ball over a mile’s distance.
He also displayed flawless technique while executing his irons, his approaches landed perfectly on the green which gave him numerous birdie opportunities.
Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy are the leading Australians and they also shot a respectable round of 68.
Many of the players, including Adam Scott, did not have the time to practise on the course due the unfavourable weather conditions. Many players stepped on the course half prepared.
