Rory McIlroy focuses on his current game rather than thinking about the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro
Rory McIlroy has no doubt become the hottest sensation in the world of golf in the past two years, because of his major wins, as well as victories in some of the biggest events on the European Tour and the PGA Tour.
Moreover, he cemented his position on the top of the Official World Golf Rankings through back-to-back victories in the Deutsche Bank Championship and the BMW Championship.
Prior to that, he also won the PGA Championship in August, the second major title victory of his career.
He now has a different task in front of him, which includes the decision making about whether he will represent the Great Britain or his home country, Northern Ireland, in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Through a tweet on Monday, he clarified that he has not made any decision yet, about his participation the 2016 Summer Games.
He stated that he wanted to focus on his game, rather than think about something that is scheduled to take place four years from now.
"I wish to clarify that I have absolutely not made a decision regarding my participation in the next Olympics," McIlroy tweeted.
"On a personal level, playing in the Olympics would be a huge honour. However, the Games in Rio are still four years away and I certainly won't be making any decisions with regards to participating any time soon”.
"...my focus right now is on being the best player I can be, trying to win major championships and contributing to what will hopefully be a victorious European side at the forthcoming Ryder Cup matches against the USA”.
McIlroy might have cleared the air for the time being by delaying his decision. However, he himself must have been feeling the pressure of what flag he should represent in 2016.
In 2009, he made a statement that he may play for the Great Britain’s team and repeated his intentions while giving an interview to the Daily Mail newspaper.
In the meantime, he also wants to hold the Northern Ireland’s flag high in the Olympics. Only the time will tell which flag will benefit from the excellence of the young superstar.
