Rory McIlroy gets criticized back at home
Rory McIlroy, current world number one has all the things going his way but he was still criticized by his own people.
After Rory said that he feels more British than Irish, and the fact that he might represent Britain instead of Ireland in the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics, his own people have turned their back on him.
After this backlash, the man from Belfast has to rethink over his statement. In the Amateurs, McIlroy has always represented Ireland.
Even in the world golf world cup, he was part of Irish team, but he does not feel very Irish, he said.
"Maybe it was the way I was brought up, I don't know, but I have always felt more of a connection with the UK than with Ireland," he said.
Well, now after seeing the reaction from his domestic fans, he said that he will rethink about the whole scenario.
"After everything that happened last week it definitely makes me reconsider my position and reconsider a lot of things," McIlroy explained. "I think it just really hit home with me how important it is for a lot of people and how important my success has
been to them”.
Rory McIlroy is loved all around the globe but he just cannot go around hurting his home crowd fans, considering they have supported him since the beginning of his career.
“It would be terrible for me to nearly segregate myself from one of those groups that supports me so much,” said the World number one.
There are still four years in the Rio Games, so he has ample time to think over his decision. People in the Northern Ireland like to call themselves Irish.
They are not impressed if they are called British. This was one reason that temperatures boiled up in Belfast.
The second main reason was that Rory has represented Ireland all around the world in major team events. Suddenly changing his loyalty for the Olympics would have surely hurt a large number of people back at home.
However, Rory McIlroy must now concentrate on the major tasks that lie ahead of him. First, the Tour Championship, in which he is paired up yet again with Tiger Woods, and the second one being the Ryder Cup.
