Rory McIlroy goes around throwing his weight behind countryman Andy Murray and friend Rafael Nadal
Rory McIlroy is drenched in his newly achieved stardom status and is savoring the fruits of his returns in his home country, Northern Ireland, also known as the birth place of golf, though arguably.
The young US Open champion has decided to lay back and enjoy the lime light for a while, before he walks into the third major of the season, the British Open at Sandwich. Meanwhile, McIlroy is spending time with some of his close compatriots and friends,
which includes the famous Tennis star, Rafael Nadal from Spain.
Nadal and McIlroy have been friends since last year when both of them met in New York for the first time. Nadal also supported McIlroy during his rampage at the US Open last week and lauded his performance, leading him all the way to the top.
McIlroy, in return, has always eloquently supported the young Tennis star in his endeavours. Interestingly, the 22-year-old Irishman is more inclined to support his countryman, and currently a dormant Tennis star, Andy Murray in his future battles against
Nadal.
“I'm a big tennis fan and would love to see Rafa win Wimbledon again. But if it was him against Murray in the final I'd have to root for Andy,” said McIlroy, who also has a Tennis court in his backyard. “I can sort of relate to Andy
on how much pressure he is under from everyone.”
Nadal, who has won a staggering ten Grand Slam titles, including six French Open titles, is just 25 years of age and was also among the first ones who congratulated McIlroy on his success at Congressional.
“It's funny, his messages sound just like he speaks – in broken English,” as McIlroy recalled. “So it was, 'Well done, you the champion, you the best all week.”
The young McIlroy is also perhaps being tipped on the positive public interactions and has remarkably changed his challenging tone to a more humble one. He came out to hurl comments on Tiger Woods' poor form at the start of the year and termed him a relic
of the past, for which he received scathing criticism from all over.
McIlroy also abstained from replying to Lee Westwood’s comments during the US Open, where many argue that Westwood tried to pressurize the young Irishman to again succumb to a meltdown in the final round on the likes of the Masters. Instead, McIlroy has
not only lauded Westwood’s stellar career so far but also tipped him to be the most deserving player to win a major title.
McIlroy decided to withdraw from the French Open, scheduled next week, and has annouced to return to competitive golf in the Open Championship next month.
