Rory McIlroy grabs early lead at the opening round of Abu Dhabi Golf Championship: Live Leaderboard Part-1
The first round of the most sought after Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship is currently underway, on a trademark sunny morning ,on the brutally long Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
Swede Robert Karlsson, who started off early this morning, has now surged to the top with a blistering knock of five-under and is still working for the last two holes on the front nine.
Karlsson started his bid for the latest Race to Dubai event from the back nine but had to accost early disappointment, falling for a bogey on the opening par-five, 10th.
He pulled in a birdie on the next but stumbled on yet another bogey on the next. He made the turn after pulling in three more birdies on the back and has carded two more on the front, successfully avoiding anymore bogeys so far.
US Open champion Rory McIlroy had a blast earlier in the day, pulling in three consecutive birdies on the opening four holes but dropped two shots on the back nine.
He made the turn with another birdie and has carded two more on the front. He is also working on the remaining two holes for the 18-hole stretch. The Northern Irishman is tied for early lead for the moment.
McIlroy said: "It was a good score and a great way to start 2012, but I don't feel I drove the ball particularly well and it's something I've got to work on. It was nothing that a good practice session won't fix. I feel it suits me really well. Just one problem - it suits Martin Kaymer even better".
McIlroy is followed by two other young Irish guns, Gareth Mayben and Michael Hoey, both poised at four-under for the moment and sharing the third place.
Both Irishmen have completed their first rounds where Mayben pulled in four birdies on the front in his bogey-free round.
Hoey, also played well in the morning, carding six birdies in all and dropped three shots.
Former world number one and most followed player on the course, Tiger Woods has also completed his first round putting up a humble two-under, 70 on the opening day.
He was not able to pull in loads of birdies but was successful in avoiding the dreadful bogeys throughout the day.
