Rory McIlroy happy that press is off him
The Open Championship tees off today and the spot light is fixed on Tiger Woods. This has made Rory McIlroy pretty relaxed ahead of the Open Championship. Last year, after winning the US Open, the press was after the Irishman at the Open Championship, which somewhat hampered his performance.
McIlroy’s low profile at the tournament might help him challenge the leaderboard at the top. This time the focus is entirely on Tiger Woods, the American has so far won three titles, more than anybody else on the PGA Tour.
Woods is also looking to challenge the record held by Jack Nicklaus for the most number of major wins.
Rory McIlroy has not been in the same form that took him to the world number one last year. People say that it is his relationship with the Tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, which is affecting his game. However, both Wozniacki and Rory have denied this claim.
McIlroy admitted a few days ago that this time around he is focusing properly on the event as there is hardly any media around him.
All the focus has been on Tiger Woods, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald ahead of the Open Championship.
“It's been great,” McIlroy said in a press conference. “It's been lovely just going about my business - definitely not the madness that was going on last year”.
It was quite disturbing for the 2011 US Open champion last year. The press followed him throughout the tournament even during the holes. Such disturbances in golf can really putt of one’s game massively. Rory finished 25th last year at the Open Championship.
"It's nice. I've tried to keep it as low-key as possible and feel like I've done that pretty well. Obviously people still come up and want photos and stuff, but the commotion's definitely not as bad," he shared.
"The hype [of last year] and everything was so big that it maybe had a little bit to do with it, but at the end of the day I just didn't play well enough to figure in the tournament".
After the poor display last year McIlroy blamed the weather, luck and his draw at the Open Championship. However, later on he regretted doing that.
