Rory McIlroy happy to add FedEx St. Jude Classic to his PGA Tour schedule
The world number two Rory McIlroy has reached the venue for the FedEx St. Jude Classic in a bid to return to form that he lost in the last three weeks while missing the cut in each of the tournaments that he played.
Usually, McIlroy does not play any event one week before the US Open, as he believed that rest was more important than playing.
However, he was forced to add the event to his schedule this year in order to bring some improvements to his game prior to the start of the second major event of the year.
"Getting here and playing the course this morning, and seeing how excited people are just to have us here, I'm really happy to be here," Northern Ireland’s McIlroy told reporters on Wednesday, following the pro-am competition.
"I'm happy to get another competitive tournament in before next week. It'll be nice to turn around my form here this week and give myself a chance to win," he added.
When he was asked about any effect owing to the change in his schedule this year, he replied by saying that he will be more than happy if he regains his form through the tournament.
He said that if he succeeds in playing well while moving into the US Open, he might think of adding it permanently to his schedule for the upcoming seasons too.
"The main thing this week is to just get some more competitive golf in,” he said. “...the last three tournaments I've played I've only played for two days and just haven't really felt like I've gotten into the tournaments”.
Following the missed cut at the Memorial Tournament, he moved to the Olympic Club in order to have a detailed overview of the conditions where he will defend the title next week.
Currently, he is the only player in the field of the St. Jude Classic, who is ranked among the top-10 players in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Zach Johnson is another player who currently holds a spot in both the top 10’s, in the FedEx Cup standings as well as the PGA Tour money list along with McIlroy.
