Rory McIlroy hints of joining the PGA Tour in the near future
Whatever made Rory McIlroy change his mind, the young Irish superstar is now contemplating a possible PGA Tour membership making a U-turn on his previous statement when he vowed never to quit on the European Tour.
The decision has probably come under the guidance of many of his close friends who have convinced McIlory to soften his tough stance on the membership issues on both sides of the Atlantic and try to be more diplomatic with his statements.
“Yeah, I'm definitely looking at coming back and playing a full schedule here,” McIlroy said. “I'm leaning towards taking my card up. I feel as if I play my best golf over here, and I'm very comfortable in this country.”
McIlroy also clued about the reasons which caused him to make an about turn on his decision and referred to his lopsided performance in the Open Championship where he dropped down the leaderboard finishing for a joint 25th. He expressed his dislike for the
Links courses right after the Open and drew heavy criticism over his lack on insight in the sport.
McIlroy’s best performances so far, have undoubtedly come on the US turf where he won his first professional title, the Quail Hollow Championship last year. He thrashed several course records to win his first major title, the US Open at the Congressional
Country Club with a whooping lead of eight shots. He has only one European Tour victories on his belt which also came at the Dubai Desert Classic that he won in 2009 overtaking Justin Rose by one shot.
McIlroy performed amazingly well at the Masters at Augusta this year where he led the field for the three opening rounds but caved in to the final round, throwing away his four shot lead.
“I thought about it and feel as if my game really suits the courses over here,” McIlroy said. “I love Quail Hollow, Memorial, Akron. You have the Match Play, Honda, Doral, the Masters. Most of my favorite events seem to be on this side of the pond. I'd like
to give it a go again and obviously last more than one year and really see how it goes.”
Several of the top ranking players on the European Tour have shown their reluctance to join the PGA Tour for unknown reasons. Darren Clarke, the Open Championship winner cited family obligations which barred him to be a frequent flyer across the Atlantic
while Martin Kaymer has shown interest in joining the PGA but still has not applied for the same.
Three of the four major winners at the moment are not the PGA Tour, something which has delivered a severe blow to the credibility of the tour. McIlroy’s decision might have come as a much needed respite in the current scenario.
