Rory McIlroy hopes to regain the momentum in his drives ahead of Dubai Desert Classic on European Tour
Despite a strong performance in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy is adamant that he needs to keep on working on his drives for better results.
McIlroy will be heading straight into the Dubai Desert Classic where he will wrestle against the sturdy field next week.
McIlroy said, "(I'll) work on still the same things that I was working on coming into (last) week, a little bit of posture, trying to get the club in the right position on the way back. (In Abu Dhabi) I improved off the tee every day. (On Sunday) I didn't miss a fairway until the 11th I think, and that was a big improvement and something I still have to work on".
McIlroy won his first European Tour title in Dubai, when he took over the likes of Justin Rose by one stroke.
Aged 19 at that time, the victory took him to an all time high of 16th on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and the young Irishman managed to stay ahead of the lot in the following events.
To improve his drives ahead of the Dubai Desert title, McIlroy has decided to skip this week’s Commercialbank Qatar Masters in Doha and will be aiming to hit more than 80 percent greens in regulation.
He only managed a humble 50 percent during his rounds at Abu Dhabi, something which helped him point out a few deficiencies.
The young Ulsterman surged to the top of the leaderboard during the opening rounds at Abu Dhabi but had to suffer a devastating two-stroke penalty on the second day, which pushed him down the ranks.
Despite his fall in the second round, the young trailblazer stayed on course and finished one stroke behind the winner Robert Rock.
For the moment, the Northern Irishman is fully charged to play on his favourite hunting ground in Dubai.
He added, "Looking forward to getting another week's worth of practise and coming out and trying to challenge for that title and my first title of the year".
McIlroy will be featured along with some of the grizzled veterans of the European Tour, ensuring a thrilling showdown of the giants.
