Rory McIlroy is all set for the weekend barrage
Rory McIlroy has had a wonderful year, especially after the Open Championship. The Irishman has been on a dream run lately, with three victories in four starts.
His two victories in the playoffs have not yet guaranteed the FedEx Cup for him but a victory at Tour Championship will certainly land in his first FedEx Cup title along with the $10 million purse.
Rory has not fired all cylinders just yet, at East Lake, but he sits nicely after the first two rounds. Rory shot one-under, 69 in the first round and two-under, 68 in the second to finish at T7.
The man from Belfast is only three strokes behind the leader, Furyk who completely surprised everybody with his birdie spree in the second round.
McIlroy has been very consistent in scoring pars over the last two days. His only highlight of the tournament so far came in the second round, at par 5, 15th where he scored an eagle.
The current PGA Championship winner is one of the seventeen players who will be heading to Chicago for the Ryder Cup. It will definitely raise the morale of the Europeans if Rory can secure the FedEx Cup.
"I'm only four shots back, so I've still got a good chance going into the weekend," the 23-year-old told the reporters.
He added, "First and foremost, I just have to try to think of my standing in this golf tournament, not really think about anything else”.
McIlroy knows that winning the FedEx Cup is more important than winning the Tour Championship, so he is playing safe till now. Cometh Sunday, he will decide what to do.
"If it comes down to it on Sunday where I need to really know what I have to do for the last few holes, then if I have a decision to make between protecting my lead in the Fed Ex Cup or trying to win the golf tournament, I think I know what I'm going to
choose,” said the world number one after his second round performance.
Rory McIlroy is seeking his fifth PGA Tour title this year and if he wins at East Lake, it would be his third consecutive victory on the Tour.
