Rory McIlroy just sneaks in for the cut – The British Open
Most would have thought that Rory McIlroy will be among the leaders at the top after his first round 67, at the British Open. Instead Rory McIlroy found himself at T51 after shooting 5-over par in the second round.
The conditions at the Royal Lytham were tough. There was wind all around and sand filled bunkers but it was not that difficult.
Rory McIlroy could only manage two birdies on the fourth and seventh hole. May be Rory got too aggressive and wanted to go for the kill which cost him dearly. The Irishman sprayed the balls around constantly and ended up with five bogeys and a double bogey
on the ninth hole.
This now leaves him twelve shots adrift of the leader Brandt Snedeker, who shot a brilliant 64 to equal the record of Nick Faldo. Unlike the first round, Rory could not recover after a few bad holes on the front nine. Instead his performance deteriorated
as the game went on.
It was probably Rory’s swing that was troubling him. After he ended his round, he was seen at the driving range along with his coach, practising his swing and perfecting with his iron shots.
As the situation stands, Rory has absolutely no chance of securing his first Open Championship victory. Things would have to go drastically wrong for all others and he would have to come up with record breaking rounds if there is any chance for him to lift
the Claret Jug.
However, McIlroy was still very optimistic about his chances at the Royal Lytham.
"Obviously, Snedeker is a little bit ahead at the minute but I feel like if I can maybe get it back to where I was at the start of (Friday), somewhere around there, three or four under going into Sunday, I think I would still have a great chance," McIlroy
said.
On the other hand, Luke Donald came up with a decent effort, shooting 2-under 68, whereas his fellow countryman Lee Westwood again had a poor round.
Westwood just managed to sneak in for the par by shooting 70 in the second round. At the moment, Westwood is at T68 third last on the scoreboard.
