Rory McIlroy leads the Deutsche Bank Open by 1 stroke
A second successive 6-under 65 means that Rory McIlroy leads the Deutsche Bank Open after the first two rounds. Rory has been in top form lately, with a victory at the PGA Championship and a string of excellent performances.
At TPC Boston, he finds himself at the top-most position after shooting two excellent rounds. He currently leads the tournament by one stroke.
Behind him is the former British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen and Tiger Woods is two strokes behind at 10-under.
All is nicely poised for the Labour Day, as some of the top golfers will be in contention on Monday.
It was expected of Rory McIlroy to do well at this course because it is a bombers paradise and the Northern Irishman is a very remarkable driver of the ball.
He hits the golf ball a mile. "Everything seemed to work pretty well out there," McIlroy said. On Friday, Rory looked just a little out of sorts but his second round 65 was more commanding and convincing than the previous one.
"I felt like I drove the ball a bit better today and hit more fairways, which gave me some more opportunities to make birdies. And I was putting well enough to take a few of those. Yeah, pleased with where I am and looking forward to the weekend".
Tiger Woods is not far behind but he must get his putting on the right track if he wants to challenge the current world number one. Throughout the year, putting has been an issue with Tiger. He must become more consistent with it.
"I think if you look at the overall list of champions here, they're all big hitters," Woods said in a bid to explain why TPC Boston provides so much drama.
The highlight of the day came when Rory eagled the 18th hole. Rory’s putting has improved since last week and he himself knows that too.
"My putting," he said. “I wasn't very comfortable on the greens at all last week”.
First rounds leader Seung-yul Noh could not repeat his heroics, as he stumbled to an even par score on Saturday. Jason Dufner was sublime once again, as he shot 66.
Meanwhile, Rickie Fowler just managed to sneak into the cut and gave himself two more days to impress Davis Love III.
If Tiger can get his putting right, then it would be a very interesting Labour Day match up as two generations of golf be going head to head to secure the title.
