Rory McIlroy maintains his lead and Tiger Woods shoots right back at the second round of the Masters Tournament
Rory McIlroy put his fears to rest and silenced his detractors by shooting another solid round at the second day of the Masters Tournament at the Augusta National. The young hotshot from Northern Ireland added a score of three under 69 to his magnificent
first round display of seven under 65 to lead by two strokes.
This was in sharp contrast to his display at the Open Championship last year where he shot a disastrous 80 in the second round after an amazing 63 on the opening day. With his performance today, however, McIlroy has put himself in quite a strong position
to win his first major but he still has the best golfers in the world to contend with.
Two shots off the lead in second place is McIlroy’s playing partner, Australian Jason Day. He posted a level 72 in the first round but his blistering eight under 64 means he’s put himself in contention for the win.
They would do well to be vary of Tiger Woods though. The man everyone had written off, shot right back into the game after carding a score of six under 66 to place himself in a tie for third place with Korean KJ Choi, just three strokes off the lead at seven
under.
Spaniard Alvaro Quiros, who shared the lead with McIlroy in the first round, could only manage a one over 73 and is now in a fifth place tie with former U.S Open champ, Australian Geoff Ogilvy at six under. At five under is another one of McIlroy’s partners,
American young gun Rickie Fowler. He is joined by World No. 2 Lee Westwood, Korean YE Yang and Americans Fred Couples and Ricky Barnes.
Last year’s winner here at Augusta, Phil Mickelson is at two under after a disappointing second round score of 72. The American was a hot favourite at the start of the tournament after winning the Shell Houston Open but needs a repeat of last week if he
hopes to win the tournament. In his final two rounds of the Houston Open he shot 18 birdies to steal the victory after a modest first two rounds, so don’t write him off just yet.
