Rory McIlroy misses the chance to raise the FedEx Cup trophy
The world number one Rory McIlroy won two of the first three tournaments in the PGA Tour Playoffs this year. Moreover, he was the leading player in the FedEx Cup standings, heading into the final leg of the one-month swing, the Tour Championship.
However, he failed to raise the FedEx Cup trophy, as Brandt Snedeker took his place on the top with a win at the East Lake Golf Club.
At the end of the tournament, the Northern Irishman seemed really disappointed with his performance, especially when he had a golden chance of earning a huge winning cheque of $10 million.
Heading into the final round on Sunday, he was just three strokes behind the leaders, Snedeker and Justin Rose.
However, his poor game off the tee did not allow him to chase his opponents on the top. During the final round, he only hit three fairways.
As a result, he had to concede a total of four bogeys and a single double bogey against only two birdies for a four-over par 74.
His final score at the end of the tournament was a one-under par 279 – nine strokes behind Snedeker.
“Little disappointed to be honest. I didn't play the way I wanted to, especially today,” he said.
In the meantime, he also praised the way Snedeker played throughout the week, to record a three-stroke victory over Rose.
“I'm a little disappointed but at the same time, Brandt really deserves to win,” he said. “He played -- if you look at his stats the whole way throughout the week, he played the best golf out of anyone”.
He added, “He knew what he needed to do. He needed to come in here and win. He controlled his own destiny just like I did, and he was able to come and do that. So because of that, he really deserves it”.
According to McIlroy, he did not create enough birdie chances throughout the week, which, in the end, proved to be the main factor behind his defeat in the tournament.
Despite missing the chance of winning the FedEx Cup, McIlroy still has the chance to earn the PGA Tour Player of the Year award. In addition to that, he also retains the top spot in the PGA Tour’s money list.
