Rory McIlroy misses the cut at the Players Championship despite being world number one player – Golf News
Rory McIlroy has become the first world number one player to miss the cut at the Players Championship, like Greg Norman did the same in 1996.
McIlroy only managed to score a single birdie throughout the second round at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course on Friday, May 11, 2012.
On the contrary, the spectators witnessed him make five bogeys that cost him to miss the cut for the third time in the tournament.
He started his second-round campaign with a birdie on the very first hole (10th) he played. At that time, he did not know that it would be his last one of the tournament.
“Birdied the first hole today and just couldn't get much going after that,” he said. “I just need to try and get the hang of this golf course somehow. It's just I just find it pretty difficult, but yeah, just one of those weeks”.
According to McIlroy, making tee shots are the most difficult strokes to make at the Pete Dye's TPC Sawgrass stadium course that features 24 water hazards and 93 bunkers.
“Off the tee I find pretty difficult around here,” the reigning US Open Champion said. “You have really got to position your ball in the fairway and to give yourself at least a chance to get to some of these pins. I just didn't do that over the last couple
of days”.
The stadium course is one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour. Hunter Mahan, the current leader in the FedEx Cup standings and the only two-time winner on the PGA Tour in 2012, also missed the cut after recorded a 76 on Friday.
Steve Stricker, who had a streak of 49 consecutive successful cuts made, finally missed the cut at the Players Championship.
Brandt Snedeker, Kyle Stanley, Mark Wilson, Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington , Ernie Els, Retief Goosen and Louis Oosthuizen are some of the players who missed the cut despite being having great profiles on the PGA Tour.
Tiger Woods, who had a poor start to the tournament with a two-over par 74, survived the challenge offered by the Players’ venue and missed the cut after recording a 68 on Friday.
