Rory McIlroy off to a slow start at the Wells Fargo Championship – Golf News
Rory McIlroy shot a two-under par 70 in the opening round of the Wells Fargo Championship to tie for the 39th position on the leader board, on Thursday, May 3, 2012.
McIlroy carded a total of four birdies against two bogeys to settle for five strokes off the pace set by the three American players, Ryan Moore, Stewart Cink and Webb Simpson.
The most disappointing moment of the round was when he three-putted the final hole of the round to register his second bogey.
According to him, he failed to impress the spectators, as he missed the fairways several times during the opening day.
He said that the course was really easy and helpful for the players. However, he failed to make the most of it and settled for an average score in the end.
"I feel the conditions were pretty perfect, there wasn't much wind and the greens were receptive so a score of 70 probably wasn't good enough," he said. "I struggled with the driver, didn't hit many fairways and if you do that round here you'll struggle
to score".
It is McIlroy’s first appearance on the PGA Tour since he last participated in the Masters Tournament, early in the month of April.
Therefore, he is among the most watched players on the course, especially because of his chances to reclaim the top position in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Meanwhile, Simpson enjoyed playing at a course located within walking distance of his home.
He carded a total of six birdies and an eagle against a lone bogey to jump to top of the leader board.
He was grouped with the 14-time major winner, Tiger Woods.
When he was asked about Woods’s fan following on the course, he replied that it was good to see such a huge crowd following his partner on the course.
“Yeah, it was good. I live a mile from here, so I know a lot of people here, and the crowds were great today,” he said. "I was nervous playing with Tiger. I prayed a lot out there. Once I made a couple birdies, I kind of enjoyed it".
Woods was tied for the 56th position after carding a one-under par score.
