Rory McIlroy on a break until Augusta – Golf News
Rory McIlroy has decided to take three weeks off in order to prepare himself for the Masters Tournament, scheduled in the first week of April, 2012.
He finished third at the Cadillac Championship last week, retaining his place on top of the Official World Golf Rankings.
McIlroy is planning to make a two-day visit to the Augusta National prior to the start of the Masters, to completely learn about the course and its conditions, with an aim to register the second major win of his career.
“I will just go for two days. I will fly up on, whatever, Wednesday or Thursday, and stay overnight and play again and then fly back down (to West Palm Beach) the next day,” McIlroy said.
McIlroy is the hot favourite to win the Masters because of his outstanding performances in the first quarter of the 2012 golf season.
He is currently number one in the Official World Golf Rankings, number one in the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Rankings as well as in the European Tour’s Ryder Cup points and number one in both the PGA Tour and European Tour Money lists.
This speaks of his success in the sport of golf at an early age of 22 and, consequently, his chances of winning the opening major event of the year.
Apart from his plans for the Masters Tournament, he left a ‘Get well soon’ message for Tiger Woods.
Woods recently withdrew from the Cadillac Championship after suffering an injury in his left Achilles tendon in the final round.
“I really hope he is healthy for the Masters,” he said. “Tiger has been the face of golf for the last 15 years. And feeling like he’s coming back to his best, or something near his best, it is great for the game”.
He added, “He can spark an interest in golf that no one else can. It is (been) great to see him back and in contention”.
According to the recent reports, Woods suffered mild injuries in his Achilles tendon and is hopeful to recover prior to the start of the Arnold Palmer Invitational next week.
It will be his last appearance before the start of the Masters where he intends to register the 15th major win of his career.
