Rory McIlroy ready for repeating history at the Wells Fargo Championship - Golf News
Two years ago, Rory McIlroy faced a nine-stroke defeat while entering the final two rounds of the Wells Fargo Championship, yet he defeated Phil Mickelson with a two-stroke margin in the end to claim his first ever PGA Tour victory of the career.
This year, he has gained a better position, making the cut at the Quail Hollow Country Club after he carded a six-under par two-round score to settle six strokes behind the leader Nick Watney.
“I think I was nine back or ten back going into the weekend here last time, so being only six back should be easy,” the world number two said.
“But no, the guys at the top of the leaderboard are obviously playing well, and I'll obviously go out and get off to a good start tomorrow and post a good one to give myself a chance going into Sunday”.
He started off with a two-under par in the opening round while carding four birdies against two bogeys.
The second round witnessed him perform even better as he kicked off his round with two consecutive birdies on the 10th and 11th holes.
Overall, he managed to score five birdies and a lone bogey to settle for four-under par, which helped him share the 13th position on the leaderboard.
McIlroy believes that he was not at his best during the opening two rounds. Yet, it was enough for him to register a decent score on the leaderboard.
“I haven't felt like I've had anything near my best the last couple days, but I've been able to get it around, and to be 6 under through two rounds is pretty good, considering the way I've hit the ball,” he said.
If McIlroy succeeds in displaying the same performance as he did two years ago, he will be celebrating the excitement of his second win in the tournament as well as the world number one spot again.
Luke Donald reclaimed the number one spot recently in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, as he only needed to finish among the top seven in the event.
Therefore, it is now a good chance for McIlroy to make a good finish and challenge Donald once again in an attempt to reach the top of the Official World Golf Rankings.
