Rory McIlroy receives BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year for 2011
Rory McIlroy has gained attention yet again after being named the BBC Northern Ireland Personality of the Year for 2011, at Media City UK in Salford, Manchester, England.
McIlroy, a 22-year-old Northern Irish golfer, successfully won another prestigious title in 2011. The year 2011 was the most successful season for the young talented golfer.
Moreover, winning the BBC award is a big achievement as the competition featured sportsmen from various sports.
McIlroy achieved the award by defeating Mark Cavendish (cycling), Alastair Cook (cricket), Luke Donald (golf), Mo Farah (athletics), Dai Greene (athletics), Amir Khan (boxing), Andy Murray (tennis) and Andrew Strauss (cricket).
The current No. 3 golfer surprised his fans when he won his first major championship—the US Open at the Congressional Country Club in June, along with the UBS Hong Kong Open in December, 2011.
Winning the award of BBC Northern Ireland’s Personality of the Year for 2011 highlights the growing potential of the rising star.
“I am thrilled to be named as the BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year. Looking back on 2011, it’s been an amazing twelve months of my life,” McIlroy said.
“It’s been a year I will always remember, not least because I won my first Major, of course. That victory at the US Open in Washington would not have been possible without the fantastic support from my family,” McIlroy added.
McIlroy is undoubtedly the shining star of 2011. He capped off the year with several prestigious titles and awards. He competed effectively against the other world champions like Luke Donald and Lee Westwood.
McIlroy came off well in almost all the events he participated in, reeling off eagles and birdies. He gripped the attention of his fans by unusual performances and gained viewership across the world.
McIlroy’s performance on the European Tour and the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour was impressive, as he finished second in the Race to Dubai. He was the only player who gave the current world number one a tough time throughout the season.
His earnings also increased to €4,002,168 on the European Tour and $1,905,609 at the PGA Tour. His performance was attractive throughout the year and he hit some amazing strokes in the last season.
Back in November, McIlroy changed his management company, named ISM. The move proved to be good, as according to some observers, it helped him become the Sports Personality of the Year.
“I’ve made great progress this year - with my game, with my results, with everything,” he said.
The coming year is likely to add more happiness and prosperity to McIlroy’s career. He has a high chance to be on the top by further improving his game and delivering his best in every tournament.
