Rory McIlroy regains his form, leads FedEx St. Jude Classic
The world number two Rory McIlroy regained his form after carding a five-under par 65 in the second round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic to take the halfway lead on Friday, June 8, 2012.
McIlroy entered the tournament with an aim to regain his form, as he missed the cuts in each of the last three tournaments he played.
For that purpose, he made a solid start on the front nine of the course by carding a birdie, followed by an amazing eagle on the second and third hole, respectively.
Thereafter, he parred seven holes prior to making another birdie on the 11th hole. However, the next two holes witnessed him suffer two bogeys that took him back to two-under par score.
Yet, he did not lose hope and kept on playing well, which allowed him to make three birdies on the final four holes.
“It was a really, really good round of golf out there today,” he said. “I saw a lot of positive signs with my ball striking. Hit a lot of good iron shots and drivers”.
“So that was something that I was really working on the last couple of weeks and feels like it's coming together for me. So excited to be in this position going into the week”.
“This is really what I wanted heading into next week,” he added. “For the time being, my mind is focused on trying to win this golf tournament and give myself a great chance of that going into the weekend”.
Golf commentators believe that McIlroy has given a hint of a strong comeback while having the US Open in his sight.
Last year, he became the youngest professional golfer, since Tiger Woods, to record a win in a major event.
This year, his chances of defending the title were jeopardized after his slumping performances in the past few weeks.
However, he is now back to his form and ready to challenge his competitors once again in each of the events that he will play.
He currently has a one-stroke lead over J.B. Holmes, Jeff Maggert and Kevin Stadler while entering the weekend in Memphis.
