Rory McIllroy remains on top as things heat up at the Dubai Desert Classic
Things seem to be heating up on the second day of the Dubai Desert Classic as the Irish sensation Rory McIllroy stubbornly holds on to his lead. Following hot on his heels are South African Thomas Aiken and Spaniard Sergio Garcia who are tied for second
place and just one stroke short of first.
The Emirates Golf Course in Dubai is the sight of Rory McIllroy’s last victory in the European Tour, when he won here in 2009. It seems to be becoming a favourite hunting ground for the youngster and he seems to have sights set firmly on victory and nothing
less. Despite shooting a bogey on the second, the Irishman still holds the lead due to his spectacular first round showing where he posted a score of 65.
Meanwhile, Thomas Aiken who has registered several wins on the Sunshine Tour and managed several top ten finishes on the European Tour since 2009, has vowed not to cut his hair again until his maiden victory at the European Tour.
Alongside him Sergio Garcia has bounced back into form in surprising fashion. The Spaniard had a very disappointing 2009 season and took a break from golf in 2010. The former World No. 2 seems to be fully rejuvenated now and should give McIllroy a tough
time in the rounds to come. On both the rounds he has kept his scorecard clear of bogies so far. Both Garcia and Aiken shot second round scores of 67 and are tied at a total score of 134.
Further down the list, tied at fifth, and showing flashes of his old brilliance, is none other than Tiger Woods. In the first round the American and former World No.1 was trailing eight shots behind McIllroy, and five and four shots behind Lee Westwood and
Martin Kaymer respectively, with whom Woods is partnered. In the 18th hole however, he made a spectacular 250 yard shot that earned him an eagle and put him back in contention.
Seemingly elevated by his awesome shot, Woods shot an error-free 66 on the second round. This meant he outplayed both Westwood and Kaymer who only managed scores of 70 and 71. If he keeps this up we might even see Tiger finally break his winless drought
and return to his former glory.
