Rory McIlroy reveals “fundamental changes” in the swing ahead of the Masters in April
Rampaging Rory McIlroy is confident that his Masters bid this year will be far more focused and logical as compared to the tragic ending of last year’s attempt.
The 22-year-old Irishman is currently world number three on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and is hoping to make it big from the very start of the year.
He is locked in a fierce battle to topple Lee Westwood from the top of the OWGR and has surged to the number two spot on one occasion in the past weeks.
McIlroy disclosed that he is currently under a swing-refurbishing drill with his long time coach, Michael Bannon, and hopes to bring healthy change regarding some of his deficiencies in the swing.
McIlroy said on Wednesday, February 15, "I still feel it's going to take a couple more weeks to fully click in. But it's definitely on the right track".
McIlroy has opened up the current year with a blistering starts at both Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, where he finished as the runner-up, and the Dubai Desert Classic, where he finished for a strong joint fifth.
He also admitted that he is working on some of the “fundamental changes” in his swing right after his strong finish in Abu Dhabi.
He will be now heading to the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship next week to start his bid for the coveted title in Tucson, Arizona.
He added, "Posture was one of the key things, and just a little bit of swing plane. I was setting the club a little steep on the way back, so the club was getting a little bit across the line at the top. So Michael and I have been working on me getting more feel, and getting the club pointed a little more left at the top so it's on the right plane. That's basically it".
McIlroy’s stunning fall in the final round in last year’s Masters, left many of the critics questioning his ability to hold his nerves under the immense final round pressures.
Heading in the final round with a four shot lead, McIlroy stumbled on back-to-back bogeys to finish for a sloppy 80 on the final day.
The young Northern Irishman also revealed later that he broke into tears over his colossal loss at Augusta National.
Barely deterred by the loss, McIlroy went over to card an overwhelming victory at the US Open at Congressional Country Club to become the youngest to lift the title after Bobby Jones.
The top-64 players in the world will wrestle their way up on the leaderboard in a four-day showdown of the giants.
Phil Mickelson and Paul Casey have already withdrawn from the tournament, while world number one Luke Donald will be hoping to retain the title he won last year.
Former world number one, Tiger Woods will also be part of the team. He posted an impressive finish in last year’s episode on the scenic desert layout.
