Rory McIlroy rewrites history to bag his first major title, The US Open
Melt down at Masters in April might have been a big blow for the ambitious Rory McIlroy, who gave away his four-shot lead in the final round, but he did everything right at the US Open from day one, to bag the first major title of his career, and that too
with a record thrashing lead.
Ruthless McIlroy devastated the US Open field at the Congressional Country Club to romp to the biggest win of his career, clearing the field with a staggering eight shots.
Growing up in Northern Ireland and watching Tiger Woods take down one major after the other, let alone the lucrative titles in the middle, McIlroy always fantasized of beating the ace one day on the course. In the final round of the 111th US Open,
Woods was far away from being part of the field, but 22-year-old McIlroy hardly let his guard down to win his first major.
With the burgeoning victory at the difficult and one of the longest courses of sport, there are undoubtedly lots more to come for the young blazing Irishman. McIlroy however, insists that he drew early inspiration from his countryman Graeme McDowell, when
the latter won US Open last year.
"(I was) just trying to go out there with the same intensity that he has, and the same (feeling that) no lead is big enough," McIlroy said. "... I was trying to go out and trying to make no mistakes, and really not give anyone a chance to catch me.... To
see a great friend like (Graeme) win a major, it only inspires you. It inspires you to go out and emulate them. And funny enough, I was able to do that this week."
McIlroy carded an aggregate of 16-under, 268 to clear the nearest competitor with eight shots. He was 14-under at the end of the third round and had started off his final round with a whooping eight shot lead.
Australian Jason Day, also a runner-up in Masters at Augusta, settled for the second spot with eight-under, 276, well behind Mcilroy but two shots better then four players who settled for a joint third.
