Rory McIlroy right behind Tiger Woods on world golf rankings – Golf News
Youngster Rory McIlroy has been performing well since the past couple of weeks. His name is seen among the top contenders of the tournament in which he has participated. Although, he has yet to win a tournament this season, but still he has played well during
the important tournaments.
Rory’s last outing in Maybank Malaysian Open proved out to be a good one for him. The 21-year-old showed his class on all the four days and finished for the third spot. He was in contention to win in Malaysia but failed to manage the challenge of the winner.
Matteo Manassero won the Malaysian Open and McIlroy was two shots behind the champion.
The 21-year-old also dominated the three rounds of the Masters at Augusta. It was once again a disappointing finish for him as he carded a disastrous round on the decisive day. As he is still in his early days, it will take some time for him to hold himself
together on the important occasions.
After he finished third in Malaysia, this improved his world ranking. He is now placed at the seventh place on the official world golf rankings. McIlroy previously was holding the ninth spot. The Irishman is just behind the former world number one, Tiger
Woods.
McIlroy has already showed that he can surely compete against the best in the world. He only has two career victories. His maiden career title came at Dubai Desert Classic in 2009. Last year, he won his first PGA Tour title of Quail Hollow Championship by
a good margin of four shots.
It will be a tough task for the young professional from Northern Ireland to keep his ranking. His compatriot, Graeme McDowell, is the top ranked player from Northern Ireland who occupies the 5th spot in the world rankings.
Already, there have been many changes in the rankings. The top three spots are still with the Europeans. Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald hold the top three positions on the world golf rankings.
McIlroy had a great chance at Augusta to win his first green jacket. It was rather the final day pressure, being the leader, which got on to his nerves. Once again, his fans were disappointed by his final day performance.
While playing on the final day at Malaysian Open, he had a chance on the final holes to match Manassero’s score and go in a play-off. The youngster again looked under a bit of pressure. Rory finished the tournament with a total score of fourteen-under par,
274.
Rory also is placed at the fifth spot on Race to Dubai rankings. Masters champion Charl Schwartzel leads this list.
The young Irishman is now headed to the Volvo China Open where the top Europeans will be among the field.
