Rory McIlroy says a fresh start after a long break always helps him land titles
Rory McIlroy has done well in the current season, soaring to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) twice but had to settle down for the number two spot as Englishman Luke Donald moved in to reclaim the title.
He is now hoping to land this week’s Wells Fargo Championship and has a strong chance of regaining the title as Donald has decided to lay back and watch the event on TV.
The Northern Irishman, who will be celebrating his 23rd birthday, insists that he plays for the middle of the year, which includes the four major titles and considers the rest of the events a mere preparation for the four majors.
Winner of the US Open last year, McIlroy was hoping to turn the tables at the first major of the year, the Masters but fell for a disastrous joint 40th alongside the four-time Masters winner Tiger Woods.
He has been off-course since then and will be making his first appearance since the Masters this year.
He said, "Basically, the most important time for me in the golf season is from the start of April until the end of August. That's when all the big tournaments are and that's when you want to play your best golf. All the stuff either side of that is more
preparation work”.
The young prodigy is often criticised for his lack of interest in the sport and spends more time laid off than any other high-profile golfer.
McIlroy believes that his key to success has been his absence from the course and his return with a fresh mind always helps him immensely in his battles in the course.
He added, "I know I've been criticized a little bit for not playing as much as some other guys leading into these few weeks, but I know I've got a big stretch coming up, and I want to be as fresh as possible for this”.
McIlroy signed up for the PGA Tour and had to play a designated number of events on the tour in order to retain his playing status.
He will be pitching in a stiff battle to retain his US Open title he won last year at the Congressional Country Club in Washington.
