Rory McIlroy set for another strong start at the BMW Championship
Following a win in the PGA Championship this year, Rory McIlroy surged to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings. Last week, he stormed to the number one spot in the FedEx Cup standings, after winning the Deutsche Bank Championship title.
This week, he aims another strong finish at the BMW Championship, in a bid to strengthen his position on the top, heading into the final stage of the US PGA Tour Playoffs, the Tour Championship.
“Obviously delighted to have won last week, to move to the top of the FedEx Cup rankings,” he said. “Obviously set myself up for a very important two weeks here and obviously the TOUR Championship in a couple weeks”.
“I can't really rest or dwell on what I've done last week,” he continued. “I want to come out here and try as best I can again and put myself in the best possible position going to Atlanta”.
“I feel like I've done that for the most part from the win last week, and yeah, just excited to be here,” he added.
McIlroy started off the 2012 PGA Tour season on a high note and recorded top-three finishes in each of the first three tournaments that he played, including a win at The Honda Classic.
At the Wells Fargo Championship, he took the second spot on the leaderboard, after Rickie Fowler defeated him in the playoffs.
Afterwards, he lost his form and missed the cut three times in the next four events. Following a fifth-place finish in the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, he regained his form and registered another two victories on the tour.
He is currently the only player after Tiger Woods, to record three victories during the 2012 PGA Tour season.
According to McIlroy, the key to success this week, at the Crooked Stick Golf Club, will be to hit the ball long and straight into the fairways.
He also stated that the rain showers in the past few weeks have softened the layout of the course. Therefore, one can expect a few mud balls during the week, which can sometimes create problems for the players.
