Rory McIlroy set to level out his last year’s performance in the Masters Tournament – Golf News
The world number two, Rory McIlroy, is desperately waiting for the Masters Tournament to start at the Augusta National, with an aim to level out the disappointing performance that he displayed during last year’s major event.
McIlroy turned his four-stroke lead into a 10-stroke deficit because of his disappointing back-nine performance in the final round of the 2011 Masters.
He now plans to enter the field of Augusta National with ‘something to prove’ as he can never forget his below par performance 12 months ago.
McIlroy, no doubt, won the very next major title, the US Open. Yet, the Masters means really special to him. He took three weeks off prior to the tournament this year in order to practice in private.
In the meantime, he also lost his number one spot in the Official World Golf Rankings that he earned with a win in the Honda Classic.
Luke Donald reclaimed the top spot as he registered a victory in the Transitions Championship in the absence of McIlroy on the PGA Tour.
McIlroy said that he did not worry about the world rankings, as he has reached that point in his career.
Therefore, his main focus is now on the Masters and a win in the major event will automatically earn him the first spot again in the world rankings.
"I'll feel like I felt going into the US Open," McIlroy said. "I'll have something to prove and have a little bit extra motivation. Maybe a little bit of revenge as well, trying to make amends for what happened".
"It's a course that suits me and it would be great to have a chance going into Sunday," he added.
On the other hand, Phil Mickelson has a different way to enter the Masters. He preferred to continue playing on the PGA Tour in order to keep his momentum going till the major event.
"If I can get some good ball-striking and some good momentum from these couple of tournaments, like I did in 2006, I think it would be a much easier route and a better route to try to capture a fourth green jacket," Mickelson said.
The Masters Tournament will officially start at the Augusta National Golf Club on April 5, 2012.
