Rory McIlroy struggles in the first round of the Cadillac Championship
Rory McIlroy, the current world leader, struggled while playing his first tournament as the world No. 1, at the mega event of the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral Miami, Florida.
The 22-year-old Northern Irish professional carded four unimpressive bogeys in the first round of the tournament at TPC Blue Monster on Thursday.
He finished the round by scoring a 1-over par and 73 strokes in total. His three birdies helped him to reach near the par at the day-end.
Last week, the young Irish star reached the top position in the world rankings, while overthrowing Luke Donald.
He is now playing a debut tournament as world no. 1, but was unable to display a tremendous performance as he did in the last PGA staged event, the Honda Classic in Florida.
"It was a bit of a struggle. It was a pretty tricky day but obviously there were good scores out there. I just didn't really get anything going," said McIlroy.
He continued, "I thought if I could shoot under par on the back nine, which was the front nine for me, post something around 70, 69, it would have been a good score. But made a couple bogeys early on that nine and couldn't really get it back".
McIlroy started his PGA career at the Honda Classic and before that he was playing at the European Tour.
He amazed the spectators by displaying enormous scores and tremendous performances since January.
However, on Thursday, he was average at the TPC Blue Monster. It is one of the toughest courses in the US and McIlroy faced increased challenges while scoring.
"A little bit. To be honest I felt a little flat out there. I don't know, I shouldn't, it's a World Golf Championship,” he added.
He further told the reporters that he will try his level best on Friday, in the second round. He is hoping to score high and to reach the top of the leaderboard.
The Australian Adam Scott and the American Jason Dufner are the current leaders of the World Golf Championship staged event. They scored a 6-under 66 in the first round.
McIlroy needs improvements and better scoring in the second round. If he manages to score enormously, then he can reach the top and save his world No. 1 position as well.
