Rory McIlroy struggling alongside Tom Watson, Bubba Watson and Jim Furyk
The Open Championship has stepped into round three at the par-70 Royal St George’s Sandwich in Kent, England. Here is a look at the live leaderboard.
2011 US Open winner, Rory McIlroy has teed off from the front and bogeyed two of the three holes. The 22-year-old golfer has dropped down from the 19th spot to the 39th
and he is expected to fall further, not being able to read the conditions well.
His poor showing came as a surprise to fans, who were expecting the US Open winner to emulate his heroic performance at the Royal St. George’s. Rory McIlroy himself was pretty confident of putting on a good show in the following rounds.
Speaking to reporters after the second round, McIlroy said, “Yeah, definitely. I don't feel as if I have to do that much differently. I just need to, as I said, keep it tight, keep it on the fairway, hit a few greens and just take your birdies here and there
because I think that's going to be the key this week, to keep it around even par.”
A similar start was shown by Sergio Garcia, who bogeyed two of the opening four holes. The player suffered in driving accuracy, which eventually led him to the wrong side of the fairway. However, the Spaniard is carrying a strong short game, which means
that he will be able to improve the scores as the round proceeds further.
Tom Watson is one-over par after twelve holes. The 61-year-old carded one birdie in the front and two bogeys at the back.
Bubba Watson, the longest striker of the PGA circuit, has completed seven holes with a score of two-over-par and he has eleven more holes to play. The American has not been a delight to watch on the link-styled courses either, as he is not accustomed of
playing on them.
Meanwhile, Louis Oosthuizen is sitting on the 45th spot of the leaderboard after 13 holes. The South African bogeyed four holes against a single birdie to compile a score of four-over-par.
Leader of the FedEx rankings, Jim Furyk is already lurking in the lowest section of the leaderboard after carding four bogeys in the front and two at the back. The American has reeled a single birdie, which has added to his total birdie count of six.
