Rory McIlroy suffers dreadful wrist injury in the opening round of PGA Championship
The first day of the PGA Championship turned out to be a difficult day for the reigning US Open champion Rory McIlroy, who suffered a terrible wrist injury while trying to make a drive for the 15th.
The Irishman tried to wrestle his ball out of the cluster of trees on the third hole and instead of trying to guide the ball on the clearing, McIlroy chose to go for the pin using a 7-iron for the purpose. He hit a thick protruding root and seriously injuring
himself on the right wrist.
“It was dangerous,” McIlroy conceded. “I think the tree was maybe a foot in front of the ball, and thought if I could make contact with the ball and just let the club go, I might get away with it. … It would have been better to chip out sideways. I still
made 5.”
McIlroy called for a medic who gave him the usual treatment and wrapped up his wrist with a white tape all the way up to the elbow. He appeared more of a Football player than a golfer for the rest of the day. The player still however, managed to finish for
an even-par, which is an exceptional performance in the given circumstances.
“It's the last major of the year,” he said. “I've got, what, six or seven months to the Masters. So I might as well try and play through the pain and get it over and done with.”
Most of the top players on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) fell for a disappointing start in the opening round of the event on a difficult heat soaked day at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
McIlroy is coming out a lackluster performance at the Open Championship at Sandwich earlier in the season and is hoping to regain his top form he displayed at the Congressional Country Club. The 22-year-old Irishman has decided has recently announced to
be moving to the PGA Tour and probably seeking a permanent residence in the US as well. His record on the American turf is in total contrast to his achievement on his home turf.
McIlroy went over for emergency Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) soon after completing his 18 holes. The prognosis claims that he has suffered a injured tendon in the wrist but McIlroy has vowed to carry on despite of his painful injury.
