Rory McIlroy – the Irish hero – tied at number 10 at the Irish Open
The most prestigious event of European tour, the Irish Open 2012 has come to an end. Much was expected from the players by the fans. Some of them were able to deliver, while others faltered.
One of the favourites for the tournament was Rory McIlroy. He had a special home town advantage at the tournament. He also had the largest gallery of spectators throughout the Open to support him.
The Irishman has a record of completing the course in 61 shots. He set this record when he was only 16 years old.
Up till now, the 23-year-old has made four appearances in his National Open. Out of these four appearances, twice he has finished in the top-ten.
Till Saturday, 30th of June, the world number 2 was six shots behind the leader Jamie Donaldson, who was twelve-under par at the end of that day.
As the third day was over, McIlroy warned the leaders that he would bounce back on the last day and sweep victory from them. “I’m coming to get you!” he said.
He tried to build pressure on his opponents. He explained that there had been extra pressure as the tournament was being at the Northern Ireland. Nonetheless, that had passed and he can concentrate on his game now.
The-23-year-old started off his last day with a five-under par. On the front nine, he was able to card three birdies, on the third, eighth and ninth hole.
On the back nine, McIlroy was able to manage two more birdies, on the tenth and the seventeenth hole.
There were no eagles, bogeys or double bogeys for the day. McIlroy was able to finish the day with 67 shots. His score for the day was five-under par and his total score was eleven-under par.
McIlroy was not able to deliver and had a disappointing end at the Royal Portrush, as he finished the course tied at the tenth position.
He finished tied tenth in the Open with Francesco Molinari, Mikko Ilonen, Simon Dyson, Paul Waring and Ross Fisher. They all earned 33,900 Euros from the tournament.
