Rory McIlroy thrashes records to gain a massive second round lead at US Open
Rory McIlroy roared to another massive five-under, 66 on the second day to become the first player ever in the history of the tournament to post a double-digit low score of -11 at the halfway mark of the US Open.
And that’s not the end of the list. McIlroy also became the first ever player to better off three shots to the previous low in terms of par. He was a whooping 13-under after 26 holes, which is also unprecedented at the US Open. McIlroy’s round was not a
perfect round as he stumbled with a double bogey at par-four, 18th, but he still managed to clear the field with a landslide six shots.
The 22-year-old Irishman boasted off a sunny disposition in the evening on Friday after the completion of second round at the Congressional Country Club’s tiring Blue Course, however, he did regret dropping the shot at the last hole.
"I really wanted to make that up and down just so I could only drop one shot," McIlroy said. "Because there is such things as good bogeys in a U.S. Open. That would have been one of them."
McIlroy started off his front nine with birdies at fourth and sixth and went ahead to pull in a stunning eagle at 354 yards Par-four, 8th. He made the turn keeping a relatively low profile only to throttle his way ahead with three more birdies
till he found water at the 18th. The bogey turned into a double bogey and he had to settle for five under, one shot behind his overnight score but more than enough to clear the field.
Asian star golfer Y.E Yang settled for an outright second with five-under, posting a two-under, 69 round on the second day. Yang dropped two shots in his back nine to fall behind the leader and is currently exhibiting excellent form to remain in contention
to grab the second major title of his career.
No less than five players were tied for the third spot including Sergio Garcia, Robert Garrigus, Zach Johnson, Brandt Snedeker and Matt Kuchar.
Masters champion, South African Charl Schwartzel had a disappointing day with a three-over, 74 and has dropped down on the leaderboard. He was tied for the second spot in the opening round.
