Rory McIlroy three shots behind the leader, still has a chance
The whole idea behind the over haul of the FedEx Cup system was to make it more interesting. After the first three rounds it seems that the organisers have finally succeeded in doing so.
When the results of the third round were finalised, there was no Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Luke Donald at the top. Instead Brandt Snedeker and Justin Rose of England are the co leaders at East Lake.
This is the time where mathematical calculations come in. If any of the top five players in the standings win, then it is a straight forward case.
However, if the likes of Justin Rose, Donald, Bubba Watson and Jim Furyk win the Tour Championship, then there could be plenty of calculations going in the club house, to decide the winner of the FedEx Cup.
Rory McIlroy was the favourite to win the Tour Championship. His three victories in four starts, which included a major as well, had put in a pole position.
Things, however, have not turned the way the Irishman would have hoped for. Nevertheless, he will still be in the contention on Sunday.
The Irishman shot a second consecutive round of 68 to end up with an overall score of five-under. He is just three shots behind his Ryder Cup team mate Justin Rose and his Ryder Cup rival Brandt Snedeker.
"I am only three shots back; I was three shots back going into the last day at [of the Deutsche Bank Open] Boston and won from there so I am just looking to do the same again,” said McIlroy.
Rory’s round included four birdies and two bogeys. The two bogeys are a bit of a concern for the man from Belfast, as they give a hint of inconsistency. A round somewhere between mid 60’s on Sunday should do the trick for the world number one.
He expressed, "It is going to be great, one of the most exciting Sundays of the year I am sure. I go out every Sunday to try to win so this will be like any other week".
Even if Rory McIlroy does not win, he still has an outside chance to nail the FedEx Cup, provided the winner is not among the top five.
