Rory McIlroy ties for the seventh place at the FedEx St. Jude Classic
The world number two Rory McIlroy carded a one-under par 69 in the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic to finish tied for the seventh place, at the TPC Southwind, on Sunday, June 10, 2012.
McIlroy started off with a five-under par three-round score and displayed some good golf on the front nine of the course.
Through 11 holes, he was four-under for the round and had the lead while playing the final eight holes of the event.
However, he failed to maintain the lead and carded two bogeys on the 12th and 14th hole. A double bogey on the 18th confirmed his defeat in the event and he had to wait for the other players for his final position on the leaderboard.
“3-wood off the tee. Trying to hit the same shot I hit yesterday off the tee and turned it too much,” he talked about the double bogey on 18th.
“I was missing that 3-wood left all day. To be honest, I wasn't really that comfortable with it, but I knew it was the shot that I needed to play and I didn't hit the way I wanted to”.
Despite the poor ending, he looked satisfied with his performance because making the cut and recording a respectable finish was the major aim of his participation in the event.
Prior to coming to Southwind, he missed the cut in each of the last three events that he played on the PGA and European Tours.
Therefore, it was essential for him to return to his form, especially when the US Open is about to begin at the Olympic Club.
“I saw a lot of positive signs this week,” he said. “I got in a good position after 11 holes of the final round and hit a couple of shots coming in, but, you know, overall it's still a pretty good week and just looking forward to getting to San Francisco
and going there”.
Golf commentators believe that he is very much back in his form and ready to defend the title at San Francisco.
However, he still needs to focus on his game and remain consistent if he wants a successful defence of the title that allowed him to become the youngest major tournament winner in history.
