Rory McIlroy to play on the European turf, The BMW PGA Championship for the first time as world number one
This will be first time young Rory McIlroy will be playing on the European turf as the current world number one and as his coveted position may be a matter pride for the young Irishman, it comes in with loads of responsibility too.
McIlroy rejoined the PGA Tour this year and although he played a few events on the European Tour earlier in the year, he has not tee-ed off on the continental Europe so far.
He will be one of the most sought after players at this week’s BMW PGA Championship and will be facing stiff challengers of the likes of Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and several major winners on the field.
For the moment though, the Ulsterman is least intimidated by the stringent field at the tournament, notwithstanding the fact that his poor performance can actually topple him from the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
He said, “I haven't played in Europe since the Alfred Dunhill Links last year, so it's nice to be back. It's shaping up to be a great week. There's a great field on a great golf course with a few changes that have been made this year, which I think really
have improved the playability of the golf course”.
Speaking ahead of the event, McIlroy also discussed his bid on the sprawling Wentworth last year.
He lauded the tough nerves of the two Englishman Westwood and Donald for the Playoff drama where the later went over to bag the title and surged as the newly crowned world number one on the OWGR.
He added, “You couldn't have written a better finish for the World Number One and Two to come down the stretch, tie after 72 holes, and play in a play-off. Luke deserved to win”.
McIlroy clinched the world number title earlier in the year with his consecutive strong finishes on either tours around the world.
He had to settle back for the number two spot as Donald came back to reclaim his crown.
McIlroy again jolted to one of his finest performances when he landed the Honda Classic on the PGA Tour to again surge as the best player in the world and has since retained the title.
