Rory McIlroy visits Haiti to spread awareness against cholera
Rory McIlroy visited Haiti as the UNICEF Ireland ambassador to spread awareness in children regarding cleanliness habits.
The 22-year-old rookie took a plane and landed in the earthquake-hit Haiti. Being the ambassador of UNICEF in Ireland, the golfer visited the disaster struck areas and met children over there. He gave away food and clothes to kids
and taught them ways to remain safe from cholera, which spreads through bacterial attack.
McIlroy demonstrated different ways of keeping oneself safe and urged the children to wash hands before eating. The Northern Irishman has been visiting different schools, camps and hospitals since the earthquake hit the region.
He has been on his feet since January and did not stay back when he found out that strong rains had once again destroyed the city.
In doing so, he visited a school in the area, which was completely destroyed during the 2010 earthquake and met the children hospitalised at nutrition centre in Saint Elizabeth. Later, he went to Tabarre, where he visited a camp
set by UNICEF to provide shelter to 200 homeless children.
After the visit, the 22-year-old said that he was amazed at the will of the children, who had lost their homes and families, but were still fighting with a great spirit.
McIlroy said, “Nothing could prepare me for meeting the children in Haiti and I am truly amazed by how happy they are. The chance that these children are getting to be kids and enjoy themselves is so important for their well-being.”
The golfer added that the entire trip was an eye-opening experience for him, as it made him realize that worth of home and a family.
He added, “The everyday things that we take for granted at home in Ireland are so longed for in Haiti. I hope my visit will bring much-needed awareness and funds for UNICEF for children not only in Haiti but across the world.”
Haiti has once again been struck by natural hazards that in return have brought disease to the area. Visits like these to the area will ensure that the people are being properly taken care of and are being guided in the right way
to protect themselves against these deadly diseases.
