Rory McIlroy wins, Tiger Woods stands at second place in the Honda Classic
Rory McIlroy recorded his first win of the year at the Honda Classic by defeating Tiger Woods, who secured the second position on the final day.
McIlroy, a 22-year-old Northern Irish professional golf player, displayed an amazing performance and finished the tournament at the top of the leaderboard.
He scored a 12-under par and 268 strokes in total. He won the title with a two-stroke lead over Woods and Tom Gillis respectively. McIlroy is heading towards the No. 1 position.
Winning the title at the Floridian site of the PGA National Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens by 17 impressive birdies and 50 pars would help him grab the leading position.
His performance throughout the four days was amazing. He had not carded any double bogey or worse, but no eagle either.
Woods was nowhere to be found in the top 10 till the third round on Friday. Then he displayed a tremendous performance in the final round and was tied for the second position with Gillis, on March 4, 2012.
"It was tough today, especially seeing Tiger make a charge," McIlroy said.
"I knew par golf would probably be good enough. To shoot 1 under in these conditions, when you go into the round with the lead, is very nice. And I was just able to get the job done".
Woods scored a 10-under par and 270 strokes in total. He carded four birdies and two eagles in the final round. This was his best performance of the current year and the best finish as well.
"I figured I had to go birdie-birdie to have a chance," Woods said after receiving the second position’s prize money.
He competed well for the title, but due to the average scoring in three rounds, he could not make it to the top.
However, he impressed the field players and spectators by scoring high and producing a bogey-free round.
"To me, it was the old Tiger back, the guy that I remember," said Ernie Els, who finished on the 21st position. "He never missed a shot or made a bad swing".
McIlroy earned handsome figures of $1,026,000 and Tiger received $501,600 in total. The Honda Classic at the PGA National Champion Course has come to an end.
