Rory McIlroy wins Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month award
Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy has been presented with 2011 Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month award for the month of June, owing to his spectacular win at the US Open Championship. The 22-year-old pro broke all records
set at the US Open on his way to clinching the title and won the tournament with a margin of eight strokes.
The news was confirmed via European Tour’s official website, where the following statement by McIlroy was posted, “It is always nice to win any award for playing good golf but this Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Month has
to go down as an extra special one given that I won the award due to my performance at Congressional. I hope this will not be the last Golfer of the Month Award I receive after winning a Major Championship!”
The judging panel, which was composed of Association of Golf Writers and radio and television anchors decided to give the honours to McIlroy for writing a new chapter in the history of golf. They presented him with an alms dish and
a jeroboam of Moët & Chandon champagne that served as a souvenir.
This award has moved McIlroy to the third place on the 2011 Race to Dubai after Luke Donald and Charl Schwartzel.
The 22-year-old faced competition with Alex Noren, who won the SAAB Wales Open, Robert Rock, who triumphed at the BMW Italian Open, Matthew Zions, who won the Saint Omer Open, Pablo Larrazabal, the winner of BMW International Open
and Travelers Championship winner Fredrik Jacobsen.
A tough criteria was set by the judging panel in order to make the final selection, which included, extraordinary shot made during the four-day session and a record set during the play. No matter how tough the criteria set was, there
was absolutely no doubt in any juror's mind about the winner of the award, as McIlroy's performance at the US Open was one of the best displays of golf seen for a while.
With this honour, McIlroy has joined the glorious group of elites on the Race to Dubai Golfer of the Month in 2011. The group includes January winner Martin Kaymer, winner in February and May Luke Donald, March winner Paul Lawrie
and Charl Schwartzel, who earned it in April.
