Rory McIlroy wins second Playoffs event in a row at the BMW Championship
The world number one Rory McIlroy shot a five-under par 67 in the final round of the BMW Championship and recorded his second PGA Tour victory in a row in the last two weeks.
It was also his third win in the last four tournaments that he played on the Tour. After a mid-season meltdown, the winning performances have offered a clear sign that he is completely ready for the Ryder Cup challenge, at the end of this month.
McIlroy began the season smartly, winning The Honda Classic and recording three other top-three finishes in the first five tournaments that he played.
The first two World Golf Championships saw him perform brilliantly, as he managed to grab the second and third place at the Accenture Match Play Championship and Cadillac Championship, respectively.
The Northern Irishman then recorded a second place finish at the Wells Fargo Championship, but soon after slipped into the doldrums.
The next five events witnessed him spend the worst weeks of his career on the PGA Tour. He missed the cut three times and tied for the 60th position in the Open Championship.
Thereafter, he once again regained his form with a tied fifth position at the World Golf Championships - Bridgestone Invitational, followed by a victory in the PGA Championship – the second major win of his career.
He kept his form going into the Playoffs and recorded victories in each of the second and third events in the one-month swing.
“Just another great week. You know, I came here with the mindset from Boston that I just wanted to keep going on this roll,” he said.
“Some suggested that I could have taken a week off and still could have been in the top 5 in the FedEx Cup standings going into Atlanta, but I felt like I was playing really well and didn't want to stop that run”.
He now leads the FedEx Cup standings. Only the other top-four players in the standings can replace him on the top with a victory in the Tour Championship. Otherwise, McIlroy will undoubtedly raise the FedEx Cup trophy this year.
