Rory McIlroy wins the PGA of America Player of the year award and the Vardon Trophy
Rory McIlroy, who has clung to the number one spot in the Official World Golf Rankings for the last four months, appears to be making headway with several accolades having been notched.
He won the PGA Tour’s Official Money List title after earning $8,047,952 prize money, thanks to his four victories this season, including a win in the PGA Championship.
He then claimed The Race to Dubai title to become the second player in the history of the game to clinch both the money list titles in one year. Luke Donald was the first player to achieve that feat in 2011.
“Winning the USPGA already made it a fabulous season, but then to follow Luke Donald in becoming No.1 in both Europe and the States is the icing on the cake,” McIlroy said.
“I set myself a number of ambitious goals at the start of the year, and to have ticked so many of the boxes feels great”.
He added, “I am going to end up playing 13 or 14 events on the European Tour this year. That’s obviously a lot less than a lot of other people but I have played in the bigger tournaments with the higher prize funds, which has allowed me to get to the top”.
On Monday, he added another two accolades to his resume by winning the PGA of America Player of the Year award and the Vardon Trophy.
The world number one comfortably won the PGA of America Player of the Year award, after having 100 points registered to his name this season. Tiger Woods was the closest contender with 66 points.
With an adjusted scoring average of 68.87, he also defeated Jim Furyk (69.30) in the race for the Vardon Trophy.
He is also likely to clinch the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year award that is scheduled to be announced next month. The PGA Tour Player of the Year award will depend on the votes to be casted by the tour members.
He, along with Woods, Jason Dufner, FedEx Champion Brandt Snedeker, reigning Masters Champion Bubba Watson, was nominated for the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year award, on Monday.
